Real Estate in Vermont

The state of Vermont has real estate transaction laws that are very similar to what is found in other states. One law that is unique to Vermont is what the state calls its Vermont Property Transfer Tax. This is a fee based on 1.5 percent of the value of the entire transaction that is assessed at closing and paid by the buyer.

Real estate agents in Vermont are not required by law to keep any of the information you give them confidential. That is why Vermont government websites and literature warn people to not give real estate agents any personal information until it is time to draft documents pertaining to the closing of the transaction. Real estate agents in Vermont sign an agreement stating that they will offer factual information to buyers and sellers, but agents are not obliged to be exclusive to either side of the real estate transaction.
